Who Was Right About Tesla Robotaxi Deployment in 2025?

August 22, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 0

This is Tesla and robotaxi news, not a home energy story, but here's what happened. Nevada regulators approved Tesla to expand its robotaxi fleet in the state to as many as 5,000 vehicles, up from just 10 currently running on the Las Vegas Strip. Tesla says it has no plans to put that many cars on the road right away. Commercial rides are expected to start within 30 days, once the company clears standard steps like vehicle inspections, insurance filings, and fare approval.

Separately, Tesla is reportedly holding off on expanding its Model Y robotaxi service because it wants to focus on scaling up production of its purpose-built Cybercab instead. Tesla has also begun offering Cybercab rides to a small group of select customers, chosen partly through a sweepstakes.

The bigger context: in mid-2025, Elon Musk predicted Tesla robotaxis would cover half the US population by the end of that year. Actual coverage remains far below that, a pattern of missed self-driving timelines that goes back roughly a decade for Tesla. None of this changes anything about home energy upgrades, rebates, or electric vehicle charging equipment for your house. It's simply an update on how far behind schedule Tesla's robotaxi expansion remains, and a reminder to treat ambitious rollout dates for new vehicle technology with some skepticism.
