This one is outside the home energy world Retrofit Relay usually covers, but here's what happened: Waymo, the self-driving car company owned by Alphabet, is preparing to launch driverless robotaxis in Tokyo. The company has agreed with Japanese partners GO (a ride-hailing app) and Nihon Kotsu (a longtime taxi operator) to start commercial service in 2027, with no human driver in the vehicle.
Waymo has already been testing in Tokyo since 2025, with its cars driving supervised by Nihon Kotsu staff to learn local streets, narrow roads, and crowded areas. Riders will eventually be able to hail either a regular taxi or one of Waymo's driverless cars through the existing GO app. Waymo already runs commercial robotaxi service in 15 US cities and says it completes over half a million paid trips a week.
For homeowners, this doesn't connect to insulation, heat pumps, or rebate programs. It's a transportation and tech story, not an energy-efficiency one. If you're following it out of general interest in clean technology, the main things to know are the timeline (commercial launch targeted for 2027), the city (Tokyo), and the partners involved (Waymo, GO, and Nihon Kotsu). There's nothing here that changes what you'd do about your own house or utility bills.
