Volvo kills off another EV for the US, but it has a replacement coming in 2027

September 10, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 24

Volvo is dropping the EX40 electric SUV from its US lineup after the 2027 model year. This follows the earlier discontinuation of the smaller, cheaper EX30. With both gone, Volvo's least expensive electric vehicle in the US becomes the EX60, an SUV starting around $60,000. The EX40 had started at about $56,545, so this is a real jump for anyone shopping Volvo's electric lineup on a budget.

Volvo does have a replacement planned. A new electric crossover called the EX50 is expected to launch by the end of 2027, with a starting price under $50,000. It will share its underlying platform with the EX60, which should mean improvements like longer driving range and faster charging compared to the outgoing EX40. Volvo has filed trademark paperwork confirming the EX50 name and that it will be electric, though full details haven't been released.

For homeowners weighing an EV purchase alongside home charging plans, this means Volvo's lower-priced electric options are shrinking for the next year or so, with the cheapest current model priced near $60,000. If you were counting on a sub-$40,000 Volvo EV, that's not on the table now or evidently anytime soon — the company's earlier promise of a $35,000 EX30 never materialized in the US. The EX60 does come with faster charging capability and access to Tesla's Supercharger network without an adapter, which could matter if you're planning home or public charging setups around a new EV purchase.
