Volkswagen EV drivers gain Digital Key access through Samsung Wallet

August 18, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This is car news rather than a home energy upgrade story, so it has little bearing on planning efficiency work or rebates for your house. Still, here's what's happening: Volkswagen is adding phone-based key access to its electric vehicles through Samsung Wallet, letting owners with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone lock, unlock, and start the car without a physical key. The feature uses wireless technology (UWB and NFC) for hands-free or tap-to-unlock access, lets owners share digital keys with other drivers, such as for valet use, and includes a way to remotely disable the key if the phone is lost.

The rollout covers several VW ID electric models, including the ID. Polo, ID. Cross, ID.3 Neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID. Buzz, but only for vehicles built on or after April 27, 2026 running specific software. It's launching across dozens of European countries, not the United States. Volkswagen hasn't said whether US drivers will get this Samsung Wallet option, though it's reportedly working on a separate Apple Wallet car-key feature for future vehicles.

For a homeowner, this doesn't affect insulation, heating and cooling systems, or rebate programs. If you drive a VW EV and charge it at home, this is simply a convenience update to how you access the car itself, not a change to the vehicle's charging equipment, battery, or anything tied to home energy costs or incentives.
