Volkswagen delays its electric minibus for the US — again

September 24, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This one isn't really about home energy upgrades, but here's the news: Volkswagen is delaying the US return of its electric ID. Buzz minibus again, this time to the 2028 model year. The company had already skipped a 2026 version and told dealers it would come back for 2027, but it's now pushing that back further.

The ID. Buzz first arrived in the US in 2024 as an electric version of VW's classic minibus, starting at about $60,000 with up to 234 miles of range per charge. Sales have been weak — VW sold just 6,140 of them in the US last year — partly because families cross-shopping electric SUVs like the Kia EV9 or Hyundai IONIQ 9 can get over 300 miles of range for similar money. That left dealers with leftover inventory; as of this report, only 38 new 2025 ID. Buzz models were listed for sale nationwide.

VW says it isn't canceling the ID. Buzz for the US, just delaying it, and it had already announced updates planned for the 2027 model, including a new "Tourer" trim built for overnight trips and compatibility with Tesla's NACS charging plug. Separately, VW's other electric model, the ID.4, is also skipping a 2027 model year as the company reworks its EV lineup. None of this affects home charging equipment or rebates — it's simply a delay in when this particular electric vehicle will be available to buy in the US.
