Vertical Heat Pump for Multifamily and Mixed-Use Projects

July 25, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 52

A company called Ice Air has released a new heat pump built for apartment buildings, condos, and mixed-use developments rather than single-family houses. The unit, called the Vertical Stack XC, fits inside a wall as a vertical, concealed system, so it does not take up mechanical room space. It is a cold-climate heat pump, meaning it is designed to keep heating a space even when outdoor temperatures drop below 0°F, which has been a weak point for some older heat pump models. It can also cool, with performance ratings up to a SEER2 of 13.4 and heating efficiency (HSPF2) up to 7.7.

If you live in a condo, co-op, or apartment building, this kind of equipment could eventually show up in your building rather than in a single house, since it is meant for developers and building owners managing many units at once. Each unit can be controlled individually rather than through one shared central system, and the equipment can connect to smart thermostats and a cloud-based building management platform from the same company.

For an owner of a standalone house, this specific product likely does not apply directly, since it is designed for multifamily construction and retrofits. But it is a sign that cold-climate heat pump technology keeps improving, including for buildings that previously relied on gas heating and lacked room for bulky new equipment. If your home is part of a larger building considering an all-electric heating upgrade, this is the kind of equipment that might come up in those conversations.
