US clean energy jobs fell in 2025 for the first time in years

October 16, 2026 · Canary Media · Score: 58

Clean energy jobs in the U.S. dropped in 2025 for the first time in four years, according to an analysis by the advocacy group E2. The country had 3.52 million clean energy jobs at the end of 2025, down nearly 37,000 from the year before. That's about a 1% drop, but it wiped out roughly 40% of the job gains made the previous year.

The losses line up with changes in federal policy. Mid-2025, Congress passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which cut renewable energy tax credits years ahead of schedule and ended incentives that had helped people pay for electric vehicles and home upgrades. The administration also froze or pulled back funding meant for efficiency and clean energy work in communities. Energy efficiency jobs took the biggest hit in raw numbers, losing over 21,000 positions, though that's still less than 1% of that sector's nearly 2.4 million jobs. Electric vehicle jobs fell more sharply in percentage terms after the EV tax credit ended in September 2025. One bright spot: jobs in battery storage and grid upgrades grew by 3.2%, since those tax credits survived the new law.

For homeowners, this is mostly a sign of how federal incentives are shifting rather than something that changes your house directly. But it's a reminder that tax credits for things like electric vehicles and home efficiency upgrades have been scaled back or eliminated at the federal level, so it's worth checking what rebates or credits still exist in your own state.
