Trade Groups Stress USMCA's Benefits for HVACR

September 4, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 59

Four major HVAC industry groups have asked the U.S. government to protect the trade deal between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico as it applies to heating, cooling, refrigeration, and water-heater equipment. In a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative, the groups (representing manufacturers, distributors, and contractors) argued that the agreement, known as USMCA, has let companies invest in factories and supplier networks across North America, keeping equipment more reliably available in the U.S. market.

The groups are pushing for three things: relief from certain tariffs (called Section 232 tariffs) on HVAC equipment and parts that qualify under the trade deal, clearer rules for what counts as "North American made," and guaranteed exemptions in any future tariff moves so manufacturers can keep planning long term. They warn that without this, the steady supply of equipment and replacement parts could be disrupted, affecting not just contractors but homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses that depend on heating and cooling systems.

For homeowners, this is mostly background news about trade policy rather than something requiring immediate action. But it is worth watching: tariffs and supply issues can affect the price and availability of furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, and water heaters, including for repairs or replacements. If trade negotiations shift in the coming months, it could eventually show up in equipment costs or how long you wait for parts.
