Toyota launches its updated bZ5 electric SUV at half the price of a Tesla Model Y

August 27, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 5

Toyota has updated its bZ5 electric SUV, but this is a China-only vehicle, not something you'll find at a US dealership. The refreshed 2027 model, sold through Toyota's joint venture there, starts around $19,500 to $30,000 depending on the version, with limited-time pricing as low as about $16,500. That's roughly half the price of a Tesla Model Y in China, even though the two SUVs are close in size. Driving range runs up to 391 miles on the larger battery option, and charging from 30% to 80% takes under 30 minutes.

The car also gets a tech upgrade, including a more advanced driver-assist system with roof-mounted radar-like sensing (LiDAR) and dozens of sensors for features like automated navigation on city streets and self-parking. None of this changes what's available to US buyers, since the bZ5 is built in China and isn't sold here.

For homeowners thinking about EVs in the US, Toyota's actual lineup here includes the bZ, C-HR, and bZ Woodland electric SUVs, with a three-row electric Highlander coming in early 2027. The cheapest of these, the 2027 Toyota bZ, starts at $34,980, still well above the China-only bZ5's price. If you're weighing an EV purchase alongside other home energy upgrades, like a heat pump or added insulation, it's worth knowing that low-cost EV pricing overseas doesn't yet translate to similar deals in the US market.
