Toyota is recalling about 10,000 C-HR EVs

September 8, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

Toyota is recalling about 10,000 electric C-HR SUVs from the 2026 model year in North America. The problem is a software glitch in the regenerative braking system, which is the feature that recaptures energy when you slow down and feeds it back into the battery. When the battery is already fully charged or close to it, the system can overcharge it, causing the electric drive system to shut down and the car to lose power while driving.

The fix is a software update to the battery's electronic control unit, done at a Toyota dealership. Only the 2026 model year C-HR EV is affected; the 2027 version, which is also on sale now, is not part of this recall. Toyota plans to notify owners of affected vehicles by mail in early November 2026.

If you own a 2026 C-HR EV, you can check whether your vehicle is included by visiting Toyota.com/recall and entering your VIN or license plate number, or by calling Toyota's Brand Engagement Center at 1-800-331-4331. The recall had not yet appeared on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's site at the time this was reported, so some details, including exactly which markets or trims are involved, may still be limited.
