Top Selling Electric Vehicles in the World — 27% EV Share in July!

August 30, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 0

Global electric car sales keep climbing. In July, plug-in vehicles (all-electric and plug-in hybrid combined) made up 27% of new car sales worldwide, up from about 24% for the year so far. Fully electric models are driving that growth, up 16% year over year, while plug-in hybrids are down 11%. For comparison, the worldwide EV share was just 6% five years ago and around 1% a decade ago. The United States is an exception to the trend: sales here are still down since the federal EV tax credit ended, though the drop has eased since earlier in the year.

On the sales charts, Tesla's Model Y remains the world's top-selling model, but its Model 3 sedan had a rough month, likely due to limited supply rather than falling demand. Smaller, cheaper EVs are gaining ground globally, filling out much of the top ten. That shift toward affordable compact models is a sign that electric cars are moving beyond early adopters and into the mainstream car-buying market.

None of this changes any home energy program or rebate directly, but it matters if you're weighing a home EV charger or thinking about how your household's driving costs might shift over time. As more affordable EV models reach the market, and as manufacturers keep expanding their lineups, the case for installing a charger at home may get stronger, especially if you're already planning electrical upgrades tied to a heat pump or panel replacement.
