Thermostats Change the HVAC Sales Plan

September 22, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 42

More heating and cooling companies are pitching smart thermostats as the hub for a whole home comfort system, not just a temperature dial. The idea is that one thermostat can coordinate several things at once: ventilation, humidity control, and air filtration, instead of you managing separate controls for each. One example mentioned is American Standard's Gold Smart Thermostat, which reads temperature and humidity and makes small fan-speed adjustments to help manage humidity, and can work alongside add-ons like a whole-home air cleaner, a humidifier or dehumidifier, or an energy recovery ventilator (a device that swaps stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air while recovering heat or coolness in the process).

The pitch to homeowners is that this coordination happens quietly in the background, so you get more consistent temperature, cleaner air, and balanced humidity without having to constantly adjust settings yourself. You'd still need to handle basics like changing filters and routine service to keep things running well.

There's also a benefit on the service side. These connected thermostats can send equipment data, like runtime, humidity readings, and fault codes, back to the contractor before a technician even shows up. That can mean a tech arrives already knowing what's wrong and with the right parts, potentially cutting down on repeat visits. If you're considering a new HVAC system, this points to a broader trend: installers may increasingly offer a bundled thermostat-plus-air-quality package rather than just a furnace or air conditioner on its own.
