The rout continues: BEVs up, ICE way down in China in Aug, Tesla also down

September 8, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 16

This one's about the car market in China, not home energy upgrades, but it touches on electric vehicles, which some homeowners charge at home with solar panels. In August, sales of fully battery-electric cars in China rose slightly (up 0.8%) even as the overall car market shrank sharply. Sales of plug-in hybrids fell 29.6%, extended-range electric vehicles dropped 22.2%, and gas-powered and conventional hybrid vehicles fell 40%. Overall retail car sales in China were down 23.6% from a year earlier.

Tesla did not share in the bright spot. Its China sales fell 12.4% year over year, its weakest August since 2022. BYD kept its lead by a wide margin, delivering 233,000 vehicles compared to Tesla's 50,000. Meanwhile, Chinese automakers are exporting far more electric vehicles than before, with exports up 154.7% in August. Tesla's Shanghai factory also exported more cars, up 38.7%, but that growth lagged well behind the rest of the industry.

For a homeowner, none of this changes any rebate or program directly, but it's a sign that electric vehicles keep gaining ground globally even as the broader car market slows. If you're weighing an EV purchase alongside home upgrades like solar panels or a home charger, this is more evidence that electric models remain a growing, not shrinking, part of the market worldwide.
