Tesla’s ‘hardcore lawyers’ went a little too hardcore

September 23, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This story isn't about home energy upgrades, so it won't change any rebate programs or project you're planning. It's a legal dispute involving Tesla, not a policy or incentive update.

Briefly, the news: Tesla's racism trial in California opened this week, brought by the state's Civil Rights Department on behalf of more than 6,000 Black workers at its Fremont factory. The first witness testified that a Tesla lawyer called him and let him believe, for much of a 30-minute conversation, that the lawyer worked for the state rather than for Tesla. The witness already had his own lawyer, and the Tesla attorney offered to represent him instead while asking about past settlements. The state says at least four other witnesses have since stopped responding, and it suspects Tesla's legal team reached them too. Separately, Tesla's trial lawyer argued in his opening statement that a racial slur is a "term of endearment," which drew criticism given testimony describing its use in threats against workers.

None of this touches home electrification, rebates, or weatherization programs. If you're weighing a heat pump, insulation, or solar for your own house, this piece has no bearing on those plans or deadlines.
