Tesla Model Y Suspension Problems Reported In China…And Some In US, Too

September 3, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 0

Tesla's Model Y, the top-selling EV in the US and worldwide, has run into suspension trouble on two fronts. In China, a number of owners of the six-seat Model Y L have reported the rear wheel arch gap narrowing sharply after long trips or heavy loads, in some cases so much that a finger couldn't fit in the space. One owner in Hebei province reported a severe collapse after 9,000 km on a fully loaded trip; another in Shanghai saw the gap shrink after nearly 30,000 km, leading to more chassis sway and a higher chance of the underbody scraping the road. The problem can't be fixed with a software update, so affected owners need a shop visit.

In the US, the issue is smaller and different: Tesla has recalled just under 20 Model Y units built between July 26 and August 4, 2026, because a front suspension fastener may not have been tightened enough, which over time could let the suspension link separate from the frame. The cause was a manufacturing control that got mistakenly switched off at Tesla's Fremont, California plant, briefly skipping the check that confirms fasteners are properly torqued (tightened to spec). Tesla is expected to notify its stores and service centers by September 4, with owner letters going out no later than October 30. Dealers will inspect the fasteners, tighten them if needed, and check the wheel alignment at no cost to affected owners.
