Tesla Climbs Back Above 50% Share of US EV Market — Who’s in 2nd, 3rd, 4th?
New sales figures show Tesla back above 50% of the US electric vehicle market last quarter, after a stretch below that mark. This isn't because Tesla sold more cars — its sales actually fell 13% compared with a year earlier. It just fell less than the rest of the market, where sales of non-Tesla EVs dropped 27%. Overall EV sales did tick up compared with the previous two quarters, though the market remains small next to gas-powered vehicles.
Behind Tesla, the next closest brands were Chevrolet and Hyundai, each with about 5.8% of EV sales, followed by Cadillac at 5.1%, Toyota at 4.8%, and Rivian at 4.6%. Looking at parent companies rather than individual brands, General Motors placed second with 12.7% of the market, combining Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC sales. Hyundai-Kia came in third at 8.9%, Toyota Motor Co. fourth at 6.1%, and Rivian fifth at 4.6%.
For homeowners weighing an EV alongside other home energy upgrades like solar or a heat pump, the practical takeaway is that Tesla still dominates, but mainstream brands like Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Toyota are also selling in real numbers, meaning more models and more dealer familiarity outside the Tesla ecosystem. If you're shopping for a home charger or comparing an EV's fit with rooftop solar, it's worth knowing that the market remains lopsided toward one manufacturer, which can affect things like charging standards and available incentives tied to specific brands.
