Shell, FAW partner on better, safer electric semi truck batteries
Shell and the Chinese truck maker FAW are testing a new battery design for electric semi trucks that could make them more durable and better at handling heavy loads. The batteries use "immersion cooling," meaning the battery cells sit surrounded by a special fluid that manages heat more effectively than typical cooling systems in electric vehicles today.
The technology is being tried out in a concept truck called the Starship Hybrid, which has gone through industry-standard testing and is now being put through FAW's real-world commercial vehicle trials, including heavy charging and discharging conditions. Early results claim the new cooling setup nearly doubled the truck's ability to climb steep grades while loaded, improved energy efficiency slightly, and could extend battery life by up to about a third compared with conventional cooling. The companies say this points toward safer, longer-lasting batteries for future hybrid and electric trucks.
This is still concept and validation-stage work aimed at commercial trucks, not passenger vehicles, so it has no direct bearing on home energy systems or rebates. But battery cooling advances like this one often trickle down over time into the broader EV and battery storage market, including home backup batteries, since manufacturers share cooling and safety innovations across product lines. For now, homeowners curious about EVs or battery storage can treat this as an early signal of where battery technology is heading, rather than something that changes any current purchase or rebate decision.
