Proposed Grid 2.0 protocol would enable “connect and manage” for both load and generation
A group of energy companies, led by AES Corporation, has proposed a new set of rules called "Grid 2.0" for connecting new power sources and big electricity users to the grid faster. The idea builds on a "connect and manage" approach already used in Texas's ERCOT grid, which has been credited with helping that state add solar, wind, and battery storage quickly. Instead of guaranteeing full, uninterrupted service right away, new projects would get some guaranteed power plus additional flexible service that can be adjusted as needed.
The reasoning behind the proposal is that grids are often built to handle rare peak demand hours — as few as 30 hours a year — which means a lot of infrastructure sits underused most of the time. By separating the process of connecting new loads and generators from that peak-planning requirement, the authors argue utilities could use existing power lines and equipment more fully, potentially spreading costs across more electricity sold and helping keep prices down.
This is a technical, industry-level proposal, not a program you can sign up for. It's meant for utilities and grid operators to adopt voluntarily, and any utility using it would decide how to offer these flexible connection options to new power plants or large electricity users, like data centers. The authors, working under a new "Grid 2.0 Task Force," are asking for public comment and plan to develop related guidance on speeding up renewable energy connections and managing battery storage under the same approach. For now, there's no direct step for homeowners to take, though changes like this could eventually influence how affordable and reliable the broader grid becomes.
