Proposed 1 GW Louisiana solar farm faces local pushback
A developer called Orion Renewable Energy Group wants to build a large solar and battery storage project in North Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, near the towns of Moss Bluff, DeQuincy, and Gillis. The $1.7 billion project would cover about 4,700 acres and generate enough electricity for roughly 200,000 average Louisiana homes. Some local residents and a state representative have pushed back, arguing the project doesn't fit areas that are mostly quiet residential communities and worrying about effects on property values and rural character.
To address those concerns, Orion has proposed several measures: 50-foot buffers of retained trees along neighboring properties and roads, plus additional planted greenery to screen the site from view. The company also plans wildlife-friendly fencing to preserve animal movement through the area, along with ground cover to control erosion and stormwater. Orion says the project could bring in about $470 million in local tax revenue over 35 years for schools, emergency services, and infrastructure. It has also created a voluntary program that would pay annual amounts to nearby homeowners (within about a third of a mile of the project) who aren't directly participating in the project. Those payments would rise 30 percent every ten years and stay attached to the property even if it's sold. Before construction starts, the developer must set aside money to restore the land once the project ends and agree to cover any road damage from construction traffic.
This project is one of several large solar developments proposed in Louisiana as the state's power demand grows, partly due to new data centers. For now, local officials and residents are still weighing whether to approve it.
