Power Electronics building 40 GW manufacturing campus in Houston

September 25, 2026 · Solar Power World · Score: 32

Power Electronics, a maker of inverters (the devices that convert power from solar panels or batteries into electricity your home can use), broke ground on a new manufacturing campus in Houston, Texas. The site covers more than 53 acres and will include two buildings, one around 150,000 square feet and another around 700,000 square feet, housing production, research, training, and offices. Once running, it's expected to produce up to 40 gigawatts of inverter capacity a year and create more than 400 jobs in the area.

For homeowners, this is mainly a manufacturing story rather than something that changes costs or rebates right away. More domestic inverter production could eventually mean shorter supply chains and more available equipment for solar and battery storage systems in the U.S., which is relevant if you're planning a solar or battery installation down the road. The company says the plant will be its most automated inverter factory yet, and with Houston added in, its total worldwide production capacity between the U.S. and Europe will reach about 105 gigawatts a year.

There's no new incentive, rebate, or program tied to this announcement, and no timeline given for when the Houston plant will be fully operational. It's worth watching as a sign of growing U.S.-based manufacturing for solar and energy storage equipment, but it doesn't require any action or change any current plans for homeowners considering upgrades.
