PJM plans to study SoftBank’s Ohio AI project under state agreement approach
A huge AI data center project in Ohio is moving forward with a grid study, and it could touch electric bills in that region even though it has nothing to do with home energy upgrades directly. SoftBank's SB Energy plans to build a roughly 10-gigawatt data center complex, called "Flagship," at a former uranium enrichment site in Pike County, Ohio. To power it, the project calls for about 10.2 gigawatts of new natural gas generation and three major new transmission lines, built by AEP Ohio. PJM, the regional grid operator for Ohio and a dozen other states, has filed plans with federal regulators to study whether the planned power lines are enough or whether more infrastructure is needed.
The part homeowners in PJM's territory may care about is cost. SB Energy has pledged to pay for the generation and power-line upgrades needed for its own project, and says it will protect other electric customers from footing the bill. But the actual rules for how those costs get divided up still have to be worked out by Ohio's utility regulator and federal regulators, so it is not yet settled how airtight that promise will be.
For most homeowners, this is a story to watch rather than act on. It does not change any rebate program or efficiency incentive. But big new data center loads like this one are becoming a bigger factor in regional electricity prices and grid reliability, so it is worth keeping an eye on how Ohio and PJM ultimately decide to allocate the costs.
