Philippines Boosts EV Infrastructure Budget as Charging Network Faces Expansion Test

September 29, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 12

This is international policy news, not something that touches most Retrofit Relay readers' homes directly, but it's worth knowing about if you're tracking how governments support electric vehicle charging. The Philippine government has proposed increasing its Electric Vehicle Industry Development Program budget more than sevenfold for 2027, from about $526,000 to $3.71 million. The money would fund charging stations at government offices and a new facility to test EV charging equipment for safety and technical standards.

The push comes as electrified vehicles (a category that includes hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric cars) made up nearly a quarter of vehicle sales in the Philippines this year. But charging infrastructure is lagging: the country has about 1,876 registered charging stations, roughly a quarter of its 2028 target under a national roadmap. The government also requires public vehicle fleets to include a minimum share of electric vehicles, which means it needs charging stations of its own.

None of this changes rebates, incentives, or programs available to homeowners elsewhere. It's a reminder that as electric vehicles spread worldwide, charging infrastructure, equipment testing, and grid capacity are becoming as important as the vehicles themselves. If you're weighing a home EV charger install, this kind of story mainly shows how differently that build-out is unfolding country by country.
