NorthStar Clean Energy powers on 120-MW Michigan solar project
A large solar farm is now up and running in Oceana County, Michigan. NorthStar Clean Energy finished the 120-megawatt Hart Solar Project, which produces enough electricity to power more than 21,000 homes. Executive Energy Services and the Michigan Public Power Agency have signed agreements to buy portions of the power it generates.
This isn't a program homeowners can sign up for, but it does add more solar power to Michigan's grid, which utilities say helps diversify and stabilize the electricity supply for the communities they serve. The project also brought some local benefits: it created more than 300 construction jobs, will generate tax revenue for local services and infrastructure, and brought about $600,000 to Hart Township through Michigan's Renewables Ready Communities Award Program for community improvements. A local food bank, Lakeshore Food Club, also received a $100,000 grant from the CMS Energy Foundation.
For homeowners, the direct takeaway is limited — this is a utility-scale project, not a rooftop or home energy program. But it's a sign of continued solar development in Michigan, and more renewable generation on the grid can be a factor in future electricity rates and availability in the state. If you're curious about what's happening with clean energy where you live, it may be worth keeping an eye on how projects like this affect local utility plans over time.
