Noon Energy, Sabanci Renewables ink JV for 1 GW long-duration storage for AI data centers
Two energy companies, Noon Energy and Sabanci Renewables, have agreed to build up to 1 gigawatt of long-duration battery storage to power AI data centers around the clock. The technology, called "ultra long-duration energy storage," uses reversible-flow batteries designed to hold power for more than 100 hours at a stretch, far longer than typical home or grid batteries. Paired with Sabanci's solar and wind projects, the goal is to smooth out the natural ups and downs of renewable power so data centers get steady electricity even when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing. The companies say the projects could store up to 100 gigawatt-hours of energy and might start operating as early as 2027.
No specific project location has been announced yet, though Sabanci Renewables is active in Texas, where it already runs and is building solar plants and is aiming to expand its U.S. pipeline significantly over the next five years. Noon Energy has also struck a separate storage supply deal with Meta earlier this year, part of a broader trend of tech companies locking down long-term clean power for their growing computing needs.
This is industry infrastructure news rather than something that changes home energy costs or rebates directly. It signals that big investment is flowing into longer-lasting battery technology, largely to meet the power demands of AI computing rather than residential needs. Homeowners won't see a direct effect from this deal, but it reflects the kind of storage innovation that could eventually filter down to more affordable, longer-lasting batteries for home and grid use.
