NLR Campus To Host US Department of Energy Geothermal Center of Excellence

September 18, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 28

The U.S. Department of Energy has set up a new Geothermal Center of Excellence at the National Laboratory of the Rockies in Golden, Colorado, announced on September 3. The center is meant to speed up research and development of geothermal energy, which taps heat stored underground to generate power. It's led by the National Laboratory of the Rockies with support from the National Energy Technology Laboratory and expertise from nine other national labs, including Argonne, Sandia, and Lawrence Berkeley.

This is a research and policy move, not a program homeowners can sign up for. The center's job is to work with industry and academic partners on technical challenges that stand in the way of scaling up geothermal power in the U.S., not to install or fund geothermal heat pumps in individual houses. An industry advisory board will help guide what research gets priority.

For homeowners, this doesn't change anything about existing geothermal heat pump systems, rebates, or installation costs right now. It signals that the federal government is investing more attention and lab resources into geothermal technology broadly, which over time could improve the systems, costs, or grid power available where you live. But no dollar amounts, rebates, or dates that would affect a home purchase or upgrade were part of this announcement. Anyone curious about geothermal heat pumps for their own home should keep checking what incentives their state or utility currently offers, since those programs operate separately from this new research center.
