NIO sells 30% of battery swap unit to Geely at more than $2 billion

September 28, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 1

NIO, the Chinese EV maker known for its battery swap stations (where you pull in and get a fresh battery instead of plugging in), is selling 30% of that swap business to Geely, the parent company of Volvo Cars, Polestar, and other brands. The deal values NIO's swap unit at roughly $2.4 billion. Geely is paying mostly by handing over its own commercial battery-swap operation, plus some cash, rather than writing a straight check. In a separate but related deal, NIO is taking a 10% stake in Geely's charging business.

The bigger story here is what this could mean down the road: NIO and Geely say they have early plans to bring battery swapping to some of Geely's own consumer car brands. If that happens, it would make NIO's swap network far more widespread across China, competing against battery maker CATL's rival swap network and against BYD, which is betting on fast charging instead. None of this changes anything for US homeowners directly, since NIO's swap stations exist only in China.

For most homeowners with an EV, though, the real takeaway is a reminder of the obvious: swapping is a novelty for a market you don't live in, but charging at home, especially paired with solar power, remains the cheapest and easiest way to keep a car topped off day to day.
