Nightpeak Energy brings second 300 MWh phase of Texas project online
A large battery storage project in southeast Texas has doubled in size. Nightpeak Energy's Bocanova site in Brazoria County now has a second phase up and running, bringing the total to 300 MW / 600 MWh. That's enough stored power to help the state's grid handle sudden spikes in demand. The second phase, called Bocanova 2, started commercial operation on September 17, using Tesla's Megapack 2 XL batteries, and runs under a long-term contract with an unnamed buyer.
This kind of project doesn't sell power directly to homeowners, but it matters for anyone on the Texas grid, known as ERCOT. Battery storage like this charges up when power is cheap or plentiful and releases it during peak demand, which can ease strain on the grid during heat waves or cold snaps. Nightpeak's CEO pointed to fast-growing electricity demand in Texas as the reason more storage like this is needed.
The project was backed by financing from MUFG Bank and U.S. Bank. Nightpeak, founded in 2022, says it now has more than 1 gigawatt of storage, gas power, and related projects either running or in development. Separately, another company, Linea Energy, recently lined up financing for a similar battery project in West Texas, suggesting more of this kind of grid-support storage is on the way across the state. None of this involves a direct program or rebate for homeowners, but it's a sign of how Texas is building out backup capacity as demand on the grid keeps climbing.
