NextEra’s $4M Trump ballroom donation muddies Dominion merger debate, watchdogs say
NextEra Energy, the company trying to buy Dominion Energy and create the nation's largest regulated electric utility, gave $4 million last year toward building President Trump's new White House ballroom. The donation was part of about $333 million in private money raised for the project, according to Washington Post reporting on an internal spreadsheet tracking donors. NextEra has not explained why it made the gift.
The timing has drawn scrutiny because federal regulators appointed by Trump are currently reviewing NextEra's proposed merger with Dominion, a deal that would affect millions of customers across four states, including Virginia, where Dominion is the dominant utility. Watchdog groups say the donation raises questions about whether it could influence how favorably federal officials treat NextEra's merger application or its other dealings with the government, including a planned $100 billion energy project in Kentucky. NextEra says the donation cannot be charged to ratepayers at its Florida utility, and it was made months before the Dominion deal was announced. Still, critics argue companies don't hand over millions to a president's pet project without expecting something back.
For homeowners, this doesn't change any rates or programs right now. But if you're a Dominion customer, or live in a state where NextEra operates, the merger itself is worth watching: it still needs approval from Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and federal regulators, and could eventually affect your utility bill or who runs your local power company. Virginia's governor has already said she's skeptical of the deal.
