Musk pitches 200-mph Austin-San Antonio ‘Hyperloop’ tunnel, again

September 21, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 8

Elon Musk says the Boring Company is working on a tunnel that would let cars travel over 200 mph between Austin and San Antonio, cutting the roughly 80-mile drive to under 30 minutes from the current 2.5 hours. He posted the claim on social media this weekend with no route, no timeline, and no cost given, and the company said only that it would be "excited and honored" to build it.

This isn't new. Musk has floated hyperloop projects (high-speed travel through tunnels) for more than a decade, including a supposed New York-to-DC tunnel in 2017 and a Washington, DC station approval in 2018, neither of which materialized. In 2022 the company tested a Tesla driving through a tunnel at normal air pressure near Austin, far short of the true vacuum-tube hyperloop concept, and that project also went nowhere. The company's one real achievement is the Las Vegas Loop, a tunnel network where human-driven Teslas shuttle passengers at speeds around 35 mph, not 200. The company recently raised $3 billion at a $23 billion valuation, so money isn't the obstacle, but no permit or funded route for the Austin-San Antonio idea exists yet.

For homeowners, this is simply a transportation story with no direct impact on your house, your energy bills, or any rebate programs. There's nothing to act on here, just another high-speed tunnel announcement to watch and see if it ever becomes real.
