More Renewables Lead To Lower Demand For Methane In Europe

Europe is using a lot less methane (natural gas) for electricity, and it looks like a lasting change rather than a lucky weather year. Since Russia cut gas supplies in 2022, Europe has built out wind and solar fast, and the two now regularly produce more electricity than gas-fired power plants do. Installed wind and solar capacity has grown to nearly 750 gigawatts, almost double the roughly 400 gigawatts of gas-fired capacity still in place. For much of the year, especially spring through fall, renewables are simply outproducing gas, which shrinks how much gas Europe needs to burn or even store for winter.

This matters beyond Europe because it shows what happens once a region installs enough clean power: fossil generation declines on its own, not just because of policy goals. Gas still sets prices in wholesale power markets when it is used, and Europe still imports most of its gas, now increasingly as shipped LNG rather than pipeline gas from Russia, which brings its own price swings. Advocates argue that expanding solar, heat pumps, and district heating further could cut Europe's need for imported gas substantially by 2030.

For homeowners, the story is less about a specific rebate or deadline and more a reminder that home electrification, heat pumps for heating and hot water, plus solar and efficiency upgrades, plugs into this same shift: less demand for methane-based fuel, and a home less exposed to price swings tied to gas markets.
