Minnesota now has a wind-powered green ammonia plant

A research plant near Morris, Minnesota is now making ammonia using wind power instead of fossil gas. Ammonia is the main ingredient in the fertilizer most corn farmers rely on, and it's normally made at huge plants using natural gas, then shipped in from elsewhere. The Morris facility uses a wind turbine to run equipment that splits water into hydrogen and pulls nitrogen from the air, then combines them into ammonia on site. It's small, producing only hundreds of kilograms a day, but researchers hope to scale it up.

This matters mostly for farmers and the broader energy system rather than individual homeowners. A larger project in southern Minnesota, backed by a farm cooperative and a Texas-based company called Talusag, aims to build modular plants that could produce up to 12,000 tons of ammonia a year, though it lost out on an $8 million state grant this year and its timeline is uncertain. A similar Talusag plant is already running in Iowa.

The bigger picture: this kind of local, wind-powered ammonia production could soak up extra wind power that otherwise goes to waste on windy days when the grid has nowhere to send it. Minnesota and its neighbors currently discard enough wind power on windy days to matter, and flexible users like ammonia plants could use that surplus rather than let it go unused. The same approach could eventually feed into cleaner steelmaking, since ammonia can carry hydrogen for industrial processes. None of this changes anything for a homeowner's own energy bills or upgrades right now, but it's a sign of how wind power is being put to new uses in the Midwest.
