Making sense of the latest GOP attack on corporate climate action

September 1, 2026 · Trellis (formerly GreenBiz) · Score: 31

This is a policy story about corporate climate reporting, not a home upgrade program, but it is worth knowing the political backdrop shaping some rebate and disclosure debates.

Sixteen Republican state attorneys general, led by Nebraska's Mike Hilgers, sent a letter accusing the "Big Four" accounting firms — Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC — of conflicts of interest for supporting corporate climate disclosure guidelines while also handling climate-related audits for the same clients. The letter claims this dual role undermines the firms' independence and may violate state law. It follows earlier Republican-led actions against climate nonprofits like the Science Based Targets initiative and CDP, and against companies such as Unilever, Coca-Cola and Target over packaging sustainability work.

The campaign has support from SEC Chair Paul Atkins, who pulled the agency's backing for climate disclosure rules after Trump nominated him in 2025. So far, these AG letters have mostly produced pressure and headlines rather than formal charges — a similar letter to the nonprofit Ceres in January led nowhere after Ceres denied the claims. But one related case did reach a real outcome: Vanguard settled with regulators in February, agreeing not to push companies it invests in toward specific emissions targets, while BlackRock and State Street are still fighting similar claims.

For homeowners, there's no direct effect here — no rebate, program, or deadline changes as a result. It mainly signals a broader political fight over how companies report and act on climate information, which could shape future business and investment behavior around climate issues.
