MacGregor says demand for its electric cranes is BOOMING in 2026

August 29, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This is industry news about maritime shipping, not something that affects home energy upgrades directly. MacGregor, a Swedish company that makes cranes for cargo ships, says demand for its electric cranes is way up in 2026, now making up more than 80% of its new crane orders. Over the past fifteen years, more than 600 container ships have been fitted with the company's electric cranes.

The appeal of electric cranes over traditional hydraulic ones includes lower energy use (up to 60% less), more precise load placement, better performance in cold weather, and no risk of hydraulic oil leaking into water or onto land. Ports investing in cleaning up their operations, including the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of New York and New Jersey, are favoring this equipment as part of that push.

The company is also working on autonomous crane technology, recently showing a concept crane developed with a Norwegian university as part of an EU-funded research project. Its CEO said the next step involves working out international rules and safety standards for autonomous systems.

None of this involves rebates, incentives, or equipment relevant to home energy upgrades. It reflects a broader shift in shipping toward electrified, lower-emission machinery, similar to trends showing up in other heavy industries.
