Is CarPlay coming back to GM EVs? Its new software update could be a hint

September 15, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This is a car tech story rather than a home energy topic, but here's what happened: GM unveiled a new dashboard interface for its 2027 Sierra and Silverado pickup trucks that includes an updated version of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — the systems that let you run your phone's apps and maps on your car's screen. The new design uses a split screen, so CarPlay or Android Auto shows up in one window while GM's own controls for things like climate and vehicle range stay visible at the same time, instead of taking over the whole display.

The bigger question is whether this is coming to GM's electric vehicles. Back in 2023, GM removed CarPlay support from its EVs, switching instead to software it built with Google. That decision frustrated some buyers who prefer the familiar CarPlay or Android Auto setup. GM's announcement describes the new interface as a "single scalable foundation across electric, gas and diesel-powered vehicles," which hints CarPlay could return to electric models too. However, GM has not confirmed this, and there's no announced timeline or list of which EVs might get it.

For now, this doesn't change anything for current GM EV owners or shoppers — the change applies to next-generation gas trucks first. Anyone considering a GM EV who wants CarPlay should treat this as a possible future direction rather than a confirmed feature.
