Installed Solar Power Now Enough For 50 Million US Homes

September 11, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 42

The US now has enough solar power installed to supply roughly 50 million homes, or about a third of the country, according to the latest US Solar Market Insight report from the Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie. The industry added 11.4 gigawatts of new solar capacity in the second quarter of 2026, up 45 percent from the same period last year. Most of that growth came from large utility-scale solar farms rather than home rooftop systems, and solar plus battery storage together made up 70 percent of all new power added to the grid during the quarter.

Analysts expect the pace to hold up, with projections for around 44 gigawatts of new solar capacity a year through 2031. Part of the current surge is tied to a July 2026 deadline for developers to lock in federal tax credit eligibility, which pushed many large projects to finish quickly. After that transition, permitting delays and changes to the tax credit could slow things down.

For homeowners, this news is mostly about the bigger picture: solar has become a mainstream source of power on the grid, not a niche one, even as federal policy has grown less favorable toward it. The report does not detail rebates or incentives for home solar or upgrades specifically, so homeowners weighing their own solar or energy-efficiency projects will still want to check what programs and deadlines apply in their own state.
