Hyundai starts building the IONIQ 3, its affordable electric hatch

August 14, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 8

This is a car story, not a home energy upgrade story, but here's the gist for anyone curious. Hyundai has started building its new small electric hatchback, the IONIQ 3, at a plant in Turkey, with sales beginning in September and rolling out to more countries through the year. It's Hyundai's smallest electric model, sized between the Inster and Kona Electric.

The car comes with two battery options: a smaller 42.2 kWh pack rated for up to 213 miles of range, and a larger 61 kWh pack rated for up to 308 miles. Both can charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes on a fast charger. Prices already announced in the UK start around £22,245 (about $30,000) for the base version, rising to about £31,945 (about $42,700) for the sportier N-Line Evo trim. In the Netherlands, prices start around €27,995 (about $32,000).

For a homeowner thinking about EV ownership alongside things like home solar or an EV charger, the relevant details are the charging times and range figures above, since those affect how often you'd need to charge at home versus on the road. Nothing in this news changes home energy rebates or programs — it's simply about a new electric car entering the European market, with no mention yet of US availability or pricing.
