Hyundai is launching a new electric SUV that will sit above the IONIQ 5

August 28, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 24

Hyundai has announced plans for a new electric SUV that will slot above the IONIQ 5 in its lineup, sitting between the IONIQ 5 and the larger Santa Fe. Details are limited so far, and it's not yet confirmed whether this "D-SUV" will come to the United States, though it's described as a global model and analysts note it could be well-positioned given the IONIQ 5's strong sales here (it was the third best-selling electric vehicle in the US in the first half of this year).

This is part of a much larger plan Hyundai laid out this week: 100 new or refreshed vehicles worldwide by 2030, including 58 for North America. Over the next eight months alone, the company plans seven new launches, including a new Elantra, an IONIQ 3, an updated Tucson and Tucson Hybrid, and its first plug-in hybrid-style Santa Fe (called an EREV, which combines a gas engine with a large battery for extended electric range). By 2030, Hyundai wants electrified vehicles — hybrids, EVs, and EREVs combined — to make up 60% of its sales, way up from 23% today.

For a homeowner thinking about home charging or an EV purchase, this mostly signals that Hyundai will keep expanding its electric and hybrid options in the next few years, potentially giving buyers more size and price choices above the IONIQ 5. Nothing here is final or dated for a US release yet.
