Heliene taking commercial delivery of U.S.-sourced solar glass from Stewart Glass

September 22, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 50

A company called Heliene, which makes solar panels in Minnesota, is now getting solar glass made in the U.S. from a new supplier called Stewart Glass, which converted a former architectural glass plant in Ohio to produce it. The plant opened its first production line in March 2026 and plans a second line in June 2027.

This matters for homeowners because U.S.-made solar panels are becoming more important for keeping solar projects affordable and eligible for incentives. Federal rules increasingly reward projects that use "domestic content" — components made in the U.S. — and avoid materials tied to certain foreign suppliers. Glass has been a missing piece: Heliene could previously source most panel parts domestically but not the glass. With Stewart Glass now producing it, panels can carry a higher share of U.S.-made content, which can affect whether a solar installation qualifies for certain financial benefits.

For now, this is a supply-chain development rather than something that changes prices or availability overnight. Heliene has committed to buying a set volume of glass from Stewart each year and has been involved in testing it for quality and durability. The company says it can't use all of Stewart's output itself, so other panel makers are likely to buy from the same supplier, which could help bring costs down over time as U.S. glass production scales up. Homeowners considering solar may start seeing more panels marketed as having higher U.S.-made content as a result.
