Good News, Bad News From IAA Transportation Show In Germany

September 16, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 19

This one is about heavy trucks and buses, not home upgrades, but it shows where battery and charging technology is heading. At a trade show in Germany, battery maker CATL unveiled a new pack for commercial vehicles that can go up to 1,000 km on a charge and reach 80 percent charge in 25 minutes using megawatt-level fast charging. It's rated to last 12 years and 1.5 million km while still holding 70 percent of its capacity. A separate company, Zerova, introduced charging equipment that can deliver up to 1,440 kW of power, nearly double what Tesla's electric semi truck uses. None of this is for houses, but the same battery chemistry and cost improvements driving trucks tend to filter down over time to the batteries used in home storage and electric vehicles.

The less encouraging news: truck manufacturers in Europe are asking regulators to delay planned emissions cuts for heavy vehicles by three years, arguing that charging infrastructure and electricity costs aren't ready yet. Current EU rules call for a 43 percent cut in truck emissions by 2030 compared with 2025, rising to 90 percent by 2040. Clean-transport advocates are pushing back, saying the existing targets are already driving investment and that weakening them would just cede ground to competitors, particularly in China.

For homeowners, there's no direct action here. It's mainly a signal that battery and fast-charging technology keep improving quickly, even as the politics around emissions rules remain contested.
