Global residential storage market to hit 46.1 GWh in 2026

September 17, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 32

Home battery systems, which store solar power for use when the sun isn't shining, are growing fast worldwide. A new industry report projects global home battery capacity will reach 46.1 gigawatt-hours in 2026, with growth spreading well beyond Europe. Germany, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, and the UK remain strong markets, and Ukraine is emerging as a fast-growing one. But Australia is now expected to become the single largest home battery market in the world in 2026, driven by its Cheaper Home Batteries Program, a subsidy launched in July 2025. Growth is also picking up in Pakistan, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Japan, often in places where power outages and high electricity prices push homeowners toward battery backup. In the U.S., home battery demand continues but remains smaller than these other markets.

On the product side, a few trends are shaping what's available. All-in-one solar-plus-battery systems that are compact and easier to install are becoming more common, from brands including Sigenergy, GoodWe, Sungrow, and Huawei. Manufacturers are also building systems that coordinate solar, batteries, EV charging, and heat pumps together, aiming to manage household energy use and lower costs as more homes add electric vehicles and heat pumps. Some systems now support vehicle-to-home charging, letting an EV's battery power the house.

Battery makers are also adding artificial intelligence and connections to "virtual power plants," networks where utilities tap home batteries for grid support in exchange for payments to homeowners, a feature gaining traction in Europe and Australia. No single manufacturer dominates the market yet, so competition and features are likely to keep evolving. Homeowners considering a battery system may find it worth checking whether similar subsidy programs or utility payment options exist where they live.
