Glencore reaches new milestone at all-electric Sudbury copper mine

September 5, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 5

Glencore Canada has hit a development milestone at its Onaping Depth project, part of the Craig mine near Sudbury, Ontario. The site is notable because it runs entirely on battery-electric equipment rather than diesel machines, roughly 8,500 feet underground. The company brought in Ontario's premier and local leaders to mark the achievement, which opens access to a new nickel and copper deposit for the first time.

The mine uses 23 battery-electric machines from equipment maker Epiroc, covering loading, hauling, drilling, and rock-bolting work. Glencore says going electric cuts diesel emissions and reduces the need for the heavy ventilation and cooling systems that normally use a lot of energy in underground mines. The $2 billion project is expected to support more than 400 permanent jobs and keep nickel production in the area going past 2040.

This is industry and mining news rather than something that changes what's available to homeowners right now. It doesn't come with a rebate, incentive, or program you can apply for. The relevance is more about direction: it's a sign that big industrial operations are shifting toward electric equipment to cut emissions, and it points to more mined copper and nickel, both metals used heavily in wiring, batteries, and electric motors for things like heat pumps and EVs. If you're tracking the broader move toward electrification, it's one more data point, but there's no local program or deadline attached to it.
