Ford opens preorder invites for the $30,000 Fathom EV pickup

October 14, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 24

Ford is letting people sign up now for a preorder invite list for its new electric pickup, the Fathom, though actual preorders won't open until early 2027. The truck is priced to start at $28,350 for the standard-range battery version, which comes to just under $30,000 once the $1,595 destination fee is added. That's roughly half the starting price of Ford's earlier electric pickup, the F-150 Lightning.

For homeowners, the detail worth noting is that the Fathom is built with bidirectional charging capability, meaning it could potentially send power back out of its battery rather than just drawing power in. That's the feature that lets an EV act as backup power for a house during an outage, though Ford hasn't given specifics on how this would work for home use. The truck will also use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, a cobalt- and nickel-free battery type that's generally cheaper and more durable, and it will have a Tesla-style NACS charging port, meaning it could plug into Tesla's Supercharger network.

Ford hasn't released range, towing, or final size specs yet. Production is planned at its Louisville Assembly Plant starting in 2027, with deliveries expected later that year. If you're thinking about an EV that could also back up your home's power, this is one to watch, but there's no firm timeline yet for when bidirectional charging equipment or home hookups would be available alongside it.
