Florida HVAC Tech Arrest Highlights Need for Contractor Pet Policies

September 21, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 18

A Florida HVAC technician was arrested on animal cruelty charges after a home security camera caught him kicking a homeowner's 12-year-old chihuahua during an air conditioning service call in August. The dog, named Boomer, was knocked unconscious but a vet found no broken bones. The technician, Richardson Noel, was fired the same day by his employer, ELDante HVAC Services, after the company reviewed the footage. Noel claimed the dog had tried to bite him twice; the company said that did not justify his actions and that he had failed to follow its policy of not entering a home when pets are unattended.

For homeowners, the incident is a reminder that any technician coming into your home, whether for HVAC repair, weatherization work, or another upgrade, may encounter your pets. Industry experts quoted in the coverage say responsible companies train workers not to strike, chase, or otherwise handle a homeowner's animal, and to pause work and ask the owner to secure a pet that is loose or aggressive. But they also stress that securing pets before a service visit is the homeowner's job. Even a friendly dog should be confined to a closed room when someone is coming to work on your system, since technicians aren't expected to tolerate bites or lunges regardless of intent.

If you have a scheduled HVAC or energy-upgrade visit, it is worth confirming with the company how they handle pets, and making sure your animal is secured before the crew arrives.
