EV Chargers in the Tourist Regions of Queensland
This one's about Australia, but it points to a pattern worth watching if you're near a rural tourist route anywhere. In Kingaroy, Queensland, a fast charger had been broken for months before a local EV group held an event there. It got fixed just in time, but the episode showed how thin charging coverage still is once you leave the coast and cities. The town sits at the junction of two popular tourist drives, two hours from Brisbane, and until recently only had slower "level two" chargers plus one unreliable fast charger.
More than 20 electric vehicles showed up for the meet-up, drawing owners from several nearby towns, but only about four cars actually needed to charge that day — a sign that either destination charging elsewhere is adequate or today's EVs simply have enough range for shorter regional trips. The area's mayor said she still finds a hybrid more practical for her own travel, given she covers around 1,200 km a week, which underlines the gap that remains for longer-distance regional driving.
The bigger point: EV ownership is actually growing faster in parts of regional Queensland than in Brisbane or the Gold Coast, but charger reliability and upfront installation costs remain sticking points for small towns. If you live in or travel through a rural tourist area, this is a reminder that charger coverage and upkeep — not just battery range — can still shape whether an EV works for your routine.
