Europe EV Sales Report: BEVs Reach 26% Market Share!

August 29, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 0

Fully electric cars are selling fast in Europe. In July, about 288,000 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered, up 51% from a year earlier, giving them 26% of the market that month. Add in plug-in hybrids and the total plugin share was 38%. For the year so far, electric cars hold 23% of the market, already ahead of last year's full-year result. Tesla had a weak month, down 36%, showing that other automakers are now driving the growth instead of relying on one brand.

How fast electric cars are catching on still varies widely by country. In Norway, 98% of new cars sold are electric; Denmark is at 80%, and several other northern European countries are well above 40%. Italy and Czechia, by contrast, sit at just 6% and 8%. This matters if you're watching prices and choices in your own market: places with more electric cars on the road tend to have more competition, more model choices, and often lower prices, while regions with fewer EVs may see slower price drops and fewer options for now.

On the model side, smaller and midsize electric cars from Skoda, BMW, Renault, and others took top sales spots this month, and several new budget-friendly city cars and compact SUVs are due out over the next year or two from brands including Dacia, Renault, Volkswagen, and Fiat. For anyone shopping in Europe, that points toward more affordable electric options arriving soon, though timing and pricing details weren't specified.
