ERCOT aims to complete Texas governor’s data center audit by December

August 21, 2026 · Utility Dive · Score: 23

Texas's grid operator, ERCOT, is working through an audit of hundreds of proposed data centers, with a goal of finishing by December 10. The review stems from an August 3 order by Gov. Greg Abbott pausing new data center connections to the grid until questions about their energy and water use, and use of public funds, are answered. About 300 large data center projects are caught up in the review, along with an audit of data centers and crypto facilities down to a smaller size.

For homeowners, this is not something that changes your bills or rebates right away, but it matters for the bigger picture of grid strain in Texas. Data centers make up roughly 90% of the massive backlog of projects waiting to connect to ERCOT's grid, though experts think much of that demand may be inflated or duplicated. How this shakes out affects how much new electricity demand the Texas grid has to plan for in coming years, which in turn shapes electricity prices and reliability, including during hot summers and winter storms when many homeowners already worry about outages.

ERCOT officials say a separate, related study on how these large loads affect grid stability likely will not be finished by an earlier April 2027 deadline, and the timeline is still being worked out. There is no new action for homeowners here, but the outcome could influence electricity costs and grid reliability in Texas over the next few years.
