Defender’s smaller off-road EV spotted testing ahead of its debut
This one is about a car, not a home upgrade, so it doesn't have much bearing on your house or its energy bills. Still, here's what's happening: Land Rover's Defender brand is preparing its first fully electric SUV, a smaller off-road model expected to be called the Defender Sport EV. A camouflaged test version was recently spotted running laps at Germany's Nürburgring track, suggesting the reveal is getting close, likely by the end of this year, with sales starting in 2027.
The Sport EV is meant to sit below the standard Defender in price, and well below the new Range Rover Electric, which starts around $140,000 in the US. It will use Jaguar Land Rover's new EMA platform, expected to offer battery packs between 70 and 90 kilowatt-hours and a driving range of roughly 300 to 320 miles. It also supports fast charging at 800 volts, meaning quicker top-ups than many current EVs, and will come with dual motors, all-wheel drive, and Land Rover's off-road traction system, so it should keep the brand's rugged capability despite going electric.
None of this involves home energy equipment, rebates, or utility programs, so there's nothing here that changes your options for insulation, heat pumps, or electrical upgrades. It's simply a preview of an upcoming electric vehicle that some homeowners shopping for their next car, and possibly planning a home EV charger, might want to keep an eye on later this year.
