Corpus Christi LNG expansion makes facility the second-largest in the United States

September 15, 2026 · EIA Today in Energy · Score: 18

A big natural gas export terminal in Texas just got bigger. Cheniere Energy finished the last phase of an expansion at its Corpus Christi liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in San Patricio County, completing the seventh production unit on August 28, 2026. LNG is natural gas cooled into liquid form so it can be shipped overseas. The expansion brings the terminal's output capacity to 3.1 billion cubic feet of gas per day under normal conditions, or up to 3.9 billion at peak. That makes Corpus Christi the second-largest LNG export facility in the country, behind only the Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana.

A second, related expansion project at the same site is already under construction and expected to start up in 2028, adding more capacity once finished.

For homeowners, this is mostly background news about the broader natural gas market rather than something that changes your utility bill or upgrade options right away. More LNG export capacity means more U.S. natural gas is being shipped abroad, which can factor into national gas supply and pricing trends over time, but this particular project does not carry any rebate, program, or deadline that applies directly to your house. If you are weighing a switch away from gas appliances, such as to a heat pump, this kind of infrastructure expansion is one of many factors that can influence gas prices in the years ahead, but it does not create any immediate action or benefit tied to a specific home.
