China exported more cars in 8 months than in all of 2025 – and most are EVs

September 10, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 21

China is exporting cars, especially electric ones, at a record pace. Through August, the country had already shipped 6.2 million passenger vehicles this year, topping its entire 2025 total of 6.1 million, with four months still left to count. Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles made up 58.4% of those exports in August, and their volume grew 154.7% from a year earlier. If the pace holds, China could end the year having exported more electric vehicles alone than any other country exports cars of any kind.

This isn't really a homeowner story in the direct sense, but it does say something about where the electric car market is headed globally. Chinese automakers are selling large numbers of affordable EVs abroad while other countries, including the US, have pulled back on EV manufacturing incentives. That shift affects what electric vehicles are available and how they're priced in different markets, which matters if you're thinking about pairing a future EV purchase with home solar or a home charger.

For most homeowners, the immediate takeaway is limited: this is about global car manufacturing and trade, not a new program, rebate, or deadline that touches your house. If you already have an EV or are planning one, it's worth keeping an eye on how these shifts affect vehicle prices and availability in your own country over the next year or two.
