Chery Buys Nissan Factory in Africa

August 15, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 5

Chinese automaker Chery has bought Nissan's Rosslyn factory near Pretoria, South Africa, to build electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and Jetour models. The purchase comes as China's electric vehicle market has slowed this year, pushing Chinese EV makers to expand into new markets, including other Asian countries, Europe, South America, and now Africa.

Analysts point to South Africa, Morocco, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Ghana as countries best positioned to draw more Chinese EV investment, thanks to their industrial capacity, supportive policies, or growing electricity infrastructure. Morocco's closeness to European export markets and Zimbabwe's lithium reserves, used in EV batteries, are also seen as advantages for the region. One analyst noted that most African countries import their oil and gas, which drains foreign currency reserves and strains local budgets. Switching to electric vehicles powered by locally produced electricity could ease that burden and support national economies.

This news is about a factory purchase and shifting EV manufacturing patterns in Africa. It does not involve any US rebate programs, home energy upgrades, or homeowner incentives. There is no direct effect on household energy decisions here — it is a sign that Chinese EV makers are building more manufacturing capacity outside China, in this case in South Africa, as part of a broader push to expand into new markets.
